Rebalancing your masculine & feminine energies
What are the masculine and feminine energies?
Within each of us, regardless of sex or gender, we carry the polarity of masculine and feminine energy. These energies have the power to create and destroy, to flow and to remain firm, to be forceful or to be allowing. In Chinese medicine, these energies are known as “Yin” for feminine and “Yang” for the masculine. In Ayurveda they are referred to as “Shiva & Shakti”.
The law of polarity
These energies operate under the universal law of polarity which states that everything has two “poles”: good and evil, love and hate, attraction and disconnection. Think of a battery with its negative and positive terminals. Everything in the universe has an opposite. Everything is about duality. And it’s what allows us to experience life to the fullest and appreciate the good in the world.
A good example of this is Newton’s Third Law of Motion “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” This sums up the law of polarity perfectly. It means that all forces come in pairs: negative and positive, action and reaction, masculine and feminine.
How balancing these energies help us
to unleash our fullest potential?
The feminine and masculine energies are always pulsing within us, but it's easy to forget to embrace and acknowledge both. When one energy becomes dominant that's when life feels off-balance. Symptoms include burnout, low self-esteem, confusion, jealousy and being negatively reactive. Imbalances in these energies also cause relationship turmoil.
By balancing our masculine and feminine energies, we can begin to experience the following:
- Feeling bold and courageous in our lives
- Creating a mind-body connection for better physical and emotional health
- Feeling more confident and secure in ourselves, and as a result we are willing to take risks
- Becoming more easy-going and being able to surrender, forgive and let things go
- Becoming more disciplined and focused in your daily life
- Having the ability to relax, play and experience true joy
- Being able to set firm boundaries around emotions and your body
- Deepen intimacy and connection in your relationships
HOW DOES THIS IMBALANCE IMPACT OUR RELATIONSHIPS?
For any relationship to succeed, both partners need to be in touch with their less dominant energies. When partners are stuck in either the feminine or masculine, the relationship begins to deteriorate. The partner who is stuck in the masculine energy will become rigid, hard, unforgiving and uncompromising in their approach. The partner who is stuck in the feminine will become overly sensitive, overcompensating (people pleasing), needy and demanding in their response.
A balance between the two energies is what makes us whole and sustains a healthy relationship.
The masculine and the feminine energies are like the poles of a magnet. Depending on where you are energetically on this pole, determines what kind of a relationship you have. Whether you complement each other or continuously argue and butt heads.
Particularly in romantic relationships, the polarity of masculine and feminine is necessary for sexual attraction. We’ve all heard that “opposites attract.” It’s true – and that’s where sexual polarity comes into play. If both partners are stuck in the masculine, the intimacy in their relationship dwindles as a result of their inability to relax, play and unwind. If both partners are stuck in feminine, their intimacy stagnates as a result of their inability to focus, get grounded and ignite true passion.
The Masculine & Feminine
in the physical body & mind
Neuroscience teaches us that the right side of the brain innervates the left side of our body - our feminine side aka yin. Our yin is all about the emotional brain, the feeling part of us, our subjectiveness, musical ability, spatial perception and piecing information together in ricochet fashion, abstract thinking, intuitive approach and the being, receiving, relational sides of ourselves.
We also learn that the left side of the brain innervates the right side of our body - our masculine side aka yang. Our yang is all about our logical, analytical, objective, verbal and directional ways of thinking and being. It also corresponds to our ability to follow steps in an orderly fashion, our systematic thinking, structural approach and the doing, initiating, giving, career-focused sides of ourselves.
How balancing these energies
impact our health.
In Chinese medicine, the mind and body are seen as entirely interrelated and so cannot be treated separately. In the body, we carry our own energetic signature known as qi. When our qi energy is appropriately balanced between the yin and the yang, it is flowing smoothly along the body’s meridian lines, leading to good physical and emotional health. However, if your qi moves out of balance to the extremes of either the yin or yang, this leads to ill-health due to the fact that the body and mind are now operating in a one sided manner. This places an increasing amount of pressure either solely on the right or left parts of the brain and the corresponding sides of the body.
When either side (yin or yang) is placed under non-stop pressure, this is where illness begins to manifest in the physical body. The energy in this part of the body becomes blocked & trapped causing excessive stress on the corresponding organs.
For us to have healthier and more fulfilling lives, we must be able to move gracefully between the masculine (doing) and the feminine (being) sides of our minds and bodies.
